Indira Gandhi- Uttar Pradesh (1971)

Awarded Bharat Ratna in 1971, Indira Gandhi has many accolades. She has been the one and only Lady prime minister of India, till this day. Moreover, she was the first Lady prime minister and the first Lady to hold the portfolio of defense minister. Hence, she set a true example of women’s empowerment before the concept bore prominence. She was born in 1917 in Allahabad district (now Prayagaraj) in Uttar Pradesh. Speaking of her political background, Gandhi was born into the family of Nehrus. The same Nehrus played a major role in leading the Indian National movement. Hence it is obvious that she had the quality of leadership ingrained in her.

Mother Teresa- West Bengal (1980)

Our next Bharat Ratna awardee is Mother Teresa, the definition of kindness and hope. Interestingly, she was not an Indian by blood, not by birth. However, the amount of humanitarian work towards the sick and the oppressed community made her one of our own. Mother Teresa was born Anjesze Gonxhe and became a catholic nun when she turned 18. Mother Teresa spent most of her time in India and aided those suffering from HIV-AIDS, leprosy, and tuberculosis. Her kindness helped her do something brave when nobody even touched leprosy-affected patients.

Besides this, she also ran soup kitchens, orphanages, and counseling programs. To honor her selflessness and devotion towards the less fortunate, she was not only awarded with Bharat Ratna( 1980) but also with Nobel Prize and Magsaysay Award.
