मस्जिदों से घोषणा की गई कि कश्मीरी पंडित काफिर थे और पुरुषों को कश्मीर छोड़ना होगा। अगर नहीं छोड़ा तो इस्लाम कबूल करना होगा वरना उन्हें मार दिया जाएगा। जिन लोगों ने मजबूर हो कर कश्मीर छोड़ना तय किया उन्हें अपने घर की महिलाओं को वहीं छोड़ने के लिए कहा गया। कश्मीरी मुसलमानों को पंडित घरों की पहचान करने का निर्देश दिया गया ताकि उनका धर्म परिवर्तन किया जा सके या डराया-धमकाया जा सके। नब्बे के दशक में पंडितों के विस्थापन के लिए जिम्मेदार परिस्थितियों का विस्तार से वर्णन करते हुए, यह पुस्तक विस्थापित पंडितों के साथ-साथ कभी भी कश्मीर नहीं छोड़ने वाले कश्मीरी पंडितों के साथ एक संवाद स्थापित करती है।
